Bird-proofing a Chennai apartment means closing every opening a pigeon or myna can squeeze through — balconies, utility ducts, AC ledges, parapet gaps and sunshades. Doing only the balcony is the most common mistake: birds simply shift to the duct within a fortnight.
Step 1 — Map every entry point
- Main balcony and utility balcony openings
- Duct-facing windows (the single biggest nesting spot in Chennai flats)
- AC outdoor unit ledges and their cages
- Sunshade tops and parapet ledges above windows
- Open stilt-parking beams and lift-lobby grilles in older buildings
Step 2 — Pick the right mesh for the bird
Pigeons need a 40–50 mm mesh; mynas, crows and sparrows need 20–25 mm. A 50 mm net looks tidy but will not stop small birds, so most Chennai homes end up choosing 25 mm HDPE for full coverage.
Step 3 — Netting first, spikes only where netting cannot go
Netting is the primary barrier because it excludes birds instead of merely discouraging them. Stainless-steel spikes belong on narrow ledges, AC cage tops and sunshade edges where there is nothing to tension a net against. Gels and fake owls stop working within weeks once birds learn they are harmless.
Step 4 — Fix the fixings, not just the net
Chennai's coastal air rusts mild-steel hooks in two monsoons. We use SS 304 eye bolts and a nylon border rope, tensioned so the net never flaps — a loose net wears out at the corners first and gives birds a gap to enter.
What bird-proofing costs in Chennai
Pigeon and bird nets run ₹18–₹25 per sq ft with a 3–5 year warranty depending on the quality you choose. A typical 2BHK covering both balconies and the duct opening lands between ₹4,000 and ₹7,000, including free measurement.
Clean before you close
Old droppings dry into dust that can carry histoplasmosis spores. Always have the ledge or AC cabinet cleaned and disinfected before the net goes up — we include this on request.
